A New Database Shines Light on Inscrutable Electric Bills
By Lindsay VanSomeren

The U.S. power market is fragmented and opaque, and for most of us, our monthly electric bill is a mystery we’ve learned to live with.

Still, no one wants to pay costs that feel arbitrary, especially when they’re going up. To help people cut through the confusion, a group including MIT researchers has launched a new interactive database — the Electricity Price Hub. It shows where your electric company stands, how your costs have changed since 2020, and why lower rates don’t always translate into lower bills.

Oops! A Quarter of Us Have Sent Money to the Wrong Person
By Julia Califano

Sending money is now as effortless as sending a text. Whether you’re splitting a dinner tab or paying the sitter, digital apps are the new way to hand over cash. But despite how prevalent they are, we’re still not entirely comfortable with them.

To understand our evolving relationship with these platforms, SoFi surveyed 800 U.S. adults in January. Thirty percent still wouldn’t use them to send more than $1,000, and 24% have accidentally sent money to the wrong person.

Your College Choice Could Come Down to Bad Weather
If you and your high schooler are doing college tours right now, are you letting a gloomy day cloud your judgment? According to a new study by researchers at Amherst College, the weather during a college visit has a real impact on a student’s likelihood of applying to that school, The Wall Street Journal reported.

Applications dipped 10.1% when the temperature was hotter than moderate and 5.9% when it was colder. And compared with sunny days, there were 8.3% fewer applications when it rained and 4.9% fewer when it was cloudy, the Journal reported.

While first impressions can be important, these findings are a good reminder not to overestimate them. Instead of letting something as fleeting as the weather influence your child’s decision, focus on the factors that will have a lasting impact on their experience — how students interact with one another, the accessibility of the faculty, and whether the campus culture feels like a place where your child can thrive.
